U.S. EMBASSYBeijing, China

Project Scope

The centerpiece of the embassy is the 10-story chancery building wrapped in an outer scrim of transparent, translucent, and opaque glass, floating free of the main edifice and supported by a tensile net structure. At night, the glass glows like a lantern and is one of the most visible and impressive buildings in the massive Beijing skyline. The embassy is also home to a diverse collection of artwork from 18 Chinese and American artist including Louise Bourgeois, Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons, Martin Puryear, Maya Lin, and Hai Bo.  Interior finishes include a custom escalator of steel and glass serving a cavernous three-level atrium; granite floors inlaid with contrasting stone; hardwood paneling; interior window walls; a grand pedestrian staircase of steel, glass, and wood; and extensive metal, stone, and wood detailing throughout.
