HEUMF Oak Ridge, TN

Project Scope

Caddell and its JV partner constructed the largest new single facility built at Oak Ridge in more than 40 years. This one-of-a-kind 140,000-SF high-tech center is located in the nuclear weapons complex known as Y-12—the “Fort Knox” for highly enriched uranium. The enriched uranium stored at HEUMF (Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility) is being used for maintaining the U.S. nuclear deterrent and as a source of fuel for the Naval Reactors program. Other uses of the material include down-blended fuel for commercial, research or medical isotope production reactors. Extensive use of robotics includes special robot units that place and retrieve canisters and perform a wide range of other functions. Performed as 50/50 Joint Venture.
