Customer: U.S. Department of Energy
Construction of a key component of the $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source which represents the largest initiative at Oak Ridge since the World War II Manhattan Project. The Target Building in fact serves as the “target” for a high-energy proton beam designed to knock out or “spall” neutrons from the nuclei of heavy atoms in a 40,000 lb. liquid mercury target vessel. The neutrons are cooled with sophisticated water and cryogenic systems and guided through complex “shutters” to 18 testing paths that radiate from the core. The neutrons in their pulsed streams essentially “take a picture” at the atomic level for scientists exploring the fundamental characteristics of elements and compounds. Performed as 50/50 Joint Venture. $57.2M
