Restoration of the
Columbia, South Carolina Statehouse
Renovating this 150-year-old
landmark presented Caddell
with unique challenges.
There were no original
drawings or specifications;
although located in an active
seismic zone, there were no
earthquake protection systems;
granite foundations produced
unacceptable radon levels;
the building lacked basic
fire protection and escape
systems; and major portions
of the structure were
undermined by dry rot and
insect damage. Caddell
overcame all of these
obstacles to win national
construction awards and
receive commendation and

praise from all involved in this
complex effort. Today the
restored structure stands
as one of the States
proudest landmarks and
serves as a model for a
successful and cost-effective
historic restoration program.
This project was winner of the
ABC 1998 National Excellence in
Construction Merit Award, and the
AGC 1998 National AON
Merit Award.

George R. Brown
Convention Center
Houston, Texas
A showplace for the City of
Houston, the George R.
Brown Convention Center
is one of the five largest
convention centers in
the nation, boasting
more than 1.17 million
square feet. Its
900-foot-long frontage
and high-tech look have
evoked numerous comparisons
to the acclaimed Pompidou
Center in Paris, and its
design has been imitated
by other major convention
center developments. Monte
McKinney, Caddells VP over
commercial operations, was
project manager for this
massive initiative. McKinney
received widespread acclaim
from all project parties for his
success in organizing and
planning multiple concurrent
project activities of unusual
complexity and scope.
On-schedule and within-budget
completion of this mammoth
project provided the City of
Houston instant credibility
with its convention center
clients, some of which had
been booked more than a year
prior to completion. The Center
remains one of the few civic
facilities of this type in the
country to achieve such an
outstanding construction
performance record.
